CASE STUDY: Staffing of the Pokemon World Championships

Staffing of the 2010, 2011 & 2012 Pokemon Video Game National Championships in the UK and 4 other European destinations.

What was the Challenge / Background of the Campaign?

For the third year running, Blackjack teamed up with Pumphouse Productions to staff the 2012 Pokémon Video Game National Championships. This years event kicked off in Birmingham before heading to Essen, Germany, Paris, France, Madrid, Spain and finally Milan, Italy.

What was the Campaign Objective?

Blackjack was tasked with recruiting and training 230 Brand Ambassadors, 14 language specialists, 4 Costume Characters and 2 Constume Character Chaperones for the events who would bring the event to life for the visitors of the Championships, helping to launch two new games in the Pokemon family.

What was the Solution?

All staff were recruited based on their relevant work experience and skills to match the requirements of each event. For example, the ability to speak a foreign language was vital for the majority of the roles, as were excellent customer service skills and product knowledge.

What were the Results?

With the 2010 and 2011 Championships having been an enormous success, Blackjack were thrilled to get involved with the event in 2012. We brought our experience from the previous year to the recruitment process and were able to emphasise the high expectations of the role from the outset, bringing only the most enthusiastic and outgoing staff onboard.

What were the Key Learnings of this Campaign?

The event further broadened experience in the European market. Highly experienced multi lingual staff meant customer service was at it's best and ensured all those who turned up could converse in their own mother tongue giving each participant a feeling of uniqueness whichever country they were in.
